The Short

Plot: Darla can't join the gang for a picnic, claiming she has to mind Junior, her brother, and Alfalfa gets upset. Spanky thinks she may be cheating on him, but Alfalfa scoffs at that idea, claiming that Darla would never cheat on him. At that point, he and the gang see Waldo's toy motorboat with him and Darla together cruising by them on Toluca Lake. Alfalfa is beside himself, but Spanky convinces him that the gang can whip him up a boat to level the playing field. Spanky, Buckwheat and Porky soon create a weird craft for Alfalfa which includes ducks and an open umbrella, and they challenge Waldo for some honor. Waldo laughs at their creation and their absurd proposition, sure he's going to win, but in their strange craft, they turn out to give him a good opposition. He starts to take the lead just when his boat springs a leak and starts sinking. As Darla calls for help and Waldo consults his manual for advice, Alfalfa swallows his pride to come to her rescue. Waldo is so perplexed and engrossed in figuring out his leak he never discovers Darla has left his company. Meanwhile, the real culprits, Buckwheat and Porky reveal the missing plug they took to slow down Waldo.
Quotes:

  • "After all I've done for her, she's let me down for a man with a yacht, a... speed man." - Alfalfa
  • "Oh, Waldo, you're simply divine!" - Darla
  • "Now, how could that have happened?" - Waldo

Notes/Trivia:

  • This short is basically a remake of Hi'-Neighbor! which also starred Spanky.
  • Toluca Lake is a real lake near North Hollywood and Malibu, but the boating scenes wre actually filmed at Malibu Lake in the Santa Monca Mountains near the Paramont Ranch.
  • Ellen Corby, the script girl, was the wife of Francis Corby, a Hal Roach photographer. An actress herself, she played several character roles in the movies and television before becoming most well-known as Grandma Walton on The Waltons on CBS in the Seventies.
