The Short

Plot: Farina and Mango's mother works hard doing laundry for the neighborhood (mentioned as early as the short Fire Fighters) and caring for her family but she eventually gets so invalid that a doctor is summoned to her bedside. She has no money for medicine or decent meals, and to make things worse, the landlord is threatening to foreclose for lost rent. Farina is determined to help her and grins knowing things will be all right once he delivers the laundry. The gang thinks he's laughing at them and dirties the laundry again, only to learn the truth when Farina breaks down crying. They start bringing food to help out and get the idea to drill for oil to get the money they need. When they actually seem to strike oil, the greedy landlord rushes to offer $50,000 for the claim. Farina, Mango, and their mom will be okay, but now the neighbor is angry because it was his pipeline the Rascals busted in their enterprise.
Quotes:

  • "Home, Humidor!" - Farina, speaking to his chauffeur.

Notes/Trivia:

  • This short remained lost until a pristine 35mm nitrate projection print was discovered in France with French subtitles.
  • This was the last short to be committed by Pathe Exchange. Under the M-G-M distribution package, the Hal Roach films would get a bigger budget.
