The Short

Plot: Spanky, Alfalfa, Buckwheat and Porky have formed a singing group called The Four Nitengales, but despite all the songs they have sung separately in the past, they only one they can all sing together is "Home Sweet Home," and they sing it so badly that Darla's little brother plugs his ears when they sing it. Her father has to sit through the poor performance and is ready to get rid of the boys as fast as possible. Unfortunately, by the time that comes, there's a raging storm and the boys are stuck for the night. Alfalfa is delighted to be staying the night under the same roof with Darla and ends up staying with Mr. Hood and the other guys in one room as Darla shares a room with her mother. It's not going to be a happy night for anyone either since Mr. Hood is not exactly fond of the boys. Trying to sleep with them is impossible since Alfalfa gets distracted by a moth and can't swat it until it lands on Mr. Hood, and swats them both with a slipper. Preferring a bed of porcupines, the tired father wanders downstairs to sleep on the sofa, pulling a bearskin rug up over him to keep warm, but he can't escape the boys dressed as devils and sticking him with pitchforks in his dreams. He's soon sleepwalking with the bearskin around him, inadvertantly terrifying the boys into attacking as he tries to crawl back into bed, waking up the whole house in the process!
Quotes:

  • "Where you going to find a porcupine this hour of night?" - Alfalfa

Notes/Trivia:

  • This is the first short for Gary Jasgar as Darla's little brother.
  • Johnny Arthur also played Spanky's dad in Anniversary Trouble.
  • The music in the dream sequence is "Funny and Mysterious," recycled into the gorilla sequence of the Laurel and Hardy film, "Swiss Miss."
  • This short was so popular that it spawned the sequel, Feed 'Em And Weep.
