He eventually became a main character and eventually recieved a contract from Paramount during the short, Bargain Day, their roles in the short finished with doubles. Donald returned to Hal Roach Studios afterward, his character now down to peripheral appearances. He returned to fight with Jackie in the movie "Seventeen" over actress Betty Field. Haines also got to star as "Skinny" in The East Side Kids series alongside fellow Rascal, Ernie Morrison at Monogram. During World War Two, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp (the counterpart of the modern United States Air Force) on December 10, 1941, rising through the ranks to First Lieutenant. Sadly, he was killed in action shortly thereafter at the age of twenty-four; the cause and location of his demise remain unknown.
